Aims and Application
The purpose of this Draft SPD is to supplement policies contained in the Northumberland and County and National Park Joint Structure Plan, adopted Northumberland National Park Authority Local Plan and the emerging LDF.
The Design Guide seeks to:
- Protect the special qualities of Northumberland National Park by providing the framework for the achievement of high quality and inclusive design;
- Encourage a high standard of design in new development;
- Raise awareness of the traditional buildings of Northumberland National Park;
- Encourage good maintenance of the existing building stock;
- Embed the principles of sustainable construction into new development; and
- Encourage the development of buildings that are accessible to all.
It is intended that the guide can be used by anyone involved in development, whether as property owners, designers or as local residents in the National Park.
It should be noted that there are issues other than design, sustainable construction, and accessibility that will be taken into account when considering a planning application such as biodiversity and archaeological issues. You are advised to discuss your development proposal with the Development Control Team prior to submission.
