Aspect - Cultivating Sustainable Tourism
Northumberland National Park Authority's ASPECT Project, supported by the European Union and ONE North East, aimed to define 'A Sustainable Process for Environmental and Cultural Tourism'. The overall aim was to define a process which brought various interest groups together to stimulate greater communication, and to encourage those groups to identify and discuss the issues and conflicts surrounding environmental and cultural tourism. Specifically, within a defined geographical area (the Cheviot Hills and Upper Coquetdale) project activity:
- Brought together target groups (farmers and other land managers, local community and business representatives, heritage and tourism managers, conservationists and recreational users) to identify issues and opportunities relating to cultural and heritage tourism.
- Researched, established and piloted guidelines, or a process, for the development of sustainable cultural and heritage tourism initiatives.
- Resulted in the development of a series of locally-owned and managed tourism 'products' based on the area's unique culture and heritage and in support of the rural economy.
