Building Design
The Built Environment of Northumberland National Park plays a major contribution to the special quality of the area. It is essential that new development respects these special qualities and contributes to the architectural heritage of the area.
Good design should be the aim of all those involved in the development process, but is primarily the responsibility of designers and their clients. Nevertheless, the appearance of proposed development and its relationship to its surroundings are material considerations in determining planning applications. General information on the operation of the planning system is provided by the Government in planning policy statements and guidance.
Good design is concerned with all the practical aspects of building design; soundness of construction, energy conservation, drainage, access, car parking, daylight and over-shadowing, as well as quality of appearance. But well designed buildings can enrich our surroundings and cultural life.
The National Park Authority has adopted a Building Design Guide that sets out our policy.
Public Art
The National Park Authority encourages public art as an integral part of new development or refurbishment. Public art enriches our surroundings, symbolises community identity and adds value to developments.
