The aim of this Building Design Guide Supplementary Planning Document is to:

  • provide a framework for the achievement of high quality and inclusive design;
  • encourage a high standard of design in new development;
  • raise awareness of the traditional buildings of Northumberland National Park;
  • embed the principles of sustainable construction into new development;
  • encourage the development of buildings that are accessible to all.

It is intended that the guide can be used by anyone involved in development, whether as property owners, designers or as local residents in the National Park.

As an adopted Supplementary Planning Document, the guidance within the Building Design Guide will be a material consideration in the determination of planning applications.

For information on how we consulted on the Building Design Guide read the Statement of Consultation.

Review of the Building Design Guide - Get involved now!

The existing Building Design Guide SPD was adopted by the National Park in 2006 and there have been many changes since, not least the adoption of the Core Strategy in 2009.  The document now needs to be revised to take account of new policies within the Core Strategy but it is also an opportunity to offer new guidance on issues such as advancements in building technology, renewable energy and hopefully make the document more relevant to you.

The formal process for revising such documents is stipulated by Government and you will have the opportunity to comment formally later in the year on a draft document.  However, you have the opportunity to influence the production of that draft document now by completing the questionnaire online

Building Design Guide Questionnaire

There is also the opportunity to express your interest in joining an interest group which will be invited later in the year to address specific topics which are raised through this consultation.  Please indicate on the questionnaire if you would like to be involved.
