Byrness : The Farmstead

The earliest surviving buildings of the farmstead appear to be late 18th century, however. These include the original farmhouse to the rear of the later farmhouse which forms the present Byrness Hotel.

To judge from their appearance, the group of farm buildings behind the house, comprising a stable, byre and cartshed with hay loft over, may have been constructed at the same time or perhaps in the early 19th century (Grundy 1988, 290-1: ROC 7-8).

It is clear from the evidence of MacAdam's 1828 turnpike survey that ranges of farm buildings standing either parallel or perpendicular to the original farmhouse had already been erected before the second quarter of the century.
