Case Study: Horneystead Bore Hole Drilling

Amount awarded: £4,360.00

Following a period of drought, this project entailed the drilling of a new bore hole to carry water supply to a small holding. This sustainable farming practice is a form of land management that is approved of by the Northumberland National Park Authority. The new water supply is now not only used to sustain the existing organic practices at Horneystead Farm, but it is also available as free refreshment to walkers in the area (Horneysted lies on the route of the Pennine Way National Trail). The project also eliminated the need to transport water through mobile tanks on heavy vehicles, thus stopping a former source of pollution.

Normally a project of this nature from a business would only be entitled to a 50% grant from the Sustainable Development Fund. However, with clear support for organic practices, and the provision of a service to the community, and walkers of the Pennine Way, the Grants Panel decided to award the project with the 75% contribution that the applicant had requested.
