Our quiet roads are wonderful for cyclists while mountain bikers can pick from bridleways and purpose-built trails. From family friendly day rides to the  the new 100-mile mountain bike Sandstone Way and C2C Sea to Sea epic across northern England, Northumberland National Park plays host to some stunning rides.

Long-distance biking

The Sandstone Waysandstone-way-rothwell-320 – The Sandstone Way is a new 120 mile / 193 km mountain bike route in Northumberland between Berwick upon Tweed and Hexham along a sandstone ridge in North Northumberland and linking numerous sandstone features, crags and outcrops. It heads into the unexplored interior of Northumberland and the National Park, before finishing in style on the banks of the River Tyne at Hexham.

Hadrian’s Cycleway – 174 miles from Ravenglass to Tyneside. Ride through some of England’s most dramatic and wild countryside, taking in magnificent coastal views, breathtaking countryside and Roman forts.

Pennine Cycleway North – 104 miles from the North Pennines to Berwick-upon-Tweed; still a relativley undiscovered classic route through the centre of Northern England

C2C Sea to Sea – . The UK’s most popular challenge cycle route. 140 miles passing through the northern Lake District before climbing the Pennines, and descending to the railway paths of County Durham.

Reivers Cycle Route – The Reivers Route opened in 1998 and is 173 miles long. It is also known as the ‘Return C2C’ as it takes you from the end of the west-to-east route all the way back to the start of the C2C.

Curlew Cup

Laura Massey wins Curlew CupNorthumberland National Park Authority  are passionate about cycling and are proud sponsors of the The Curlew Cup; part of the Women’s National Road Race Series. The annual 100km race is based around the Northumberland villages of Stamfordham and Matfen.

In 2012 the Race was won by Dame Sarah Storey, in 2013 by Hannah Barnes and in 2014 by Katie Archibald. The 2015 race was won by IKON-Mazda rider Laura Massey. Read more about the 2015 race here.
