Census Information

The Census is a count of all people and households and is the most complete source of information about the population that we have. The latest Census was held on Sunday 29 April 2001. A Census has been held every ten years since 1801.

In England and Wales, the Census is planned and carried out by the Office for National Statistics.  Census data is published on line through the Office of National Statistics.

The 2001 Census was the first to collect information for National Parks. Click here for the key Census 2001 data for the Northumberland National Park.

The information collected for the Census is processed in secure conditions and measures are taken to ensure that information about individuals is not disclosed. For example, information will not be released for areas containing fewer than 100 households. This means that the information available about the National Park is limited. Digital images of individual census returns will only be made public after 100 years.

There are a number of differences between the 2001 Census and that held in 1991.  Further information about this can be found on the Office for National Statistics Website.
