The Countryside Stewardship Scheme was the principal agri-environment scheme prior to 2005. Its aim was to improve the natural beauty and diversity of the countryside, enhance, restore and recreate targeted landscapes, their wildlife habitats and historical features, and to improve opportunities for public access. The Countryside Stewardship Scheme is now closed to new applicants and has been replaced by the Environmental Stewardship Scheme.
