Emperor Moth

Emperor Moth © Shaun HackettEmperor MothThe Emperor Morth is a spectacular moth by any standards, with its large eye markings which have a deterrent effect on predators. This moth flies by day and the males can be seen skipping over the moor at speed in search of females that shelter within the heather in May and June.

A mature caterpillar of the emperor moth is lime green with yellow or orange warts, which sprout black bristles!
