Date: 22nd September 2017
Time: 12:30 pm  to  3:00 pm

Walk to Wellbeing in Northumberland National Park

Get out and get healthy in Northumberland National Park with our Walk to Wellbeing Programme.

Walking to Old Roses Bower

Northumberland National Park and Active Northumberland are working with Healthy Walks leaders to design walks suitable for people wanting an easy introduction to the inspirational landscapes of Northumberland National Park.

All walks are led by West Tynedale Health Walk trained volunteers.

This walk leaves Gilsland along the Hadrian’s Wall National Trail before turning north and crossing the main road and Newcastle to Carlisle railway.  It enters the National Park at Barron House and crosses open country before entering the woods and descending to the River Irthing north of the Gilsland Spa Hotel.  If time permits, we will visit the Popping Stone before passing to the hotel on the way back to Gilsland.  If conditions permit, walkers who wish to do so will be able to use the stepping stones to cross the River Irthing on the way back to Gilsland but this is optional!

Please note that the end time is approximate only, as the walk rate will be that of the slowest walker.

We can quite often end the walk with a visit to a local cafe or pub (the costs here are your own!)

To avoid disappointment we recommend you book your tickets in advance online as places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Our new website and booking system are currently in development – if you wish to put your name on a list to be notified when bookings are open for this event, please contact our Activities Support Officer – / 01434 611505.  Tickets will be £4.00 per person.

Please dress for changeable weather, wear walking boots or shoes and bring drinks and snacks with you (this is an after lunch walk so please ensure you have eaten before the start).  Sorry, dogs are not allowed on this walk.  If you have not already booked online, please pay on arrival.

Distance: 4.75 miles

Terrain:  The walk is generally on good footpaths or quiet roads.  Paths in the woods around Gilsland Spa are a little rougher and steeper.  There is one short section of busy road where extra care will be needed.

Meeting place/walk start point: Old Station Car Park, Gilsland, CA8 7DW (near Samson Inn)

Postcode: CA8 7DW (general area)

For those wishing to use GPS/Sat-Nav to find walk start points please note that, particularly in open country, postcodes cover a large area, so, whilst the postcode will get you to the right general area, you will still need to follow the detailed directions to locate the actual Walk Start Point.

For public transport accessibility see travel line.
