Walk to Wellbeing in Northumberland National Park

Get out and get healthy in Northumberland National Park with our Walk to Wellbeing Programme.

Walking to Old Roses Bower

Northumberland National Park and Active Northumberland are working with Healthy Walks leaders to design walks suitable for people wanting an easy introduction to the inspirational landscapes of Northumberland National Park.

All walks are led by West Tynedale Health Walk trained volunteers.

This walk starts from the meeting place/point below at 12.30pm and is a delightful walk down the left bank of the North Tyne from Redesmouth to Wark.  After leaving Redesmouth along the former railway line the route descends through Countess Park woods to the river bank and then re-joins the old railway north of Heugh.  It crosses open pastures to Thorneyhirst and then returns by road and track to the riverbank at Low Carry House and follows it to Wark.  We can look forward to a very pleasant ramble through early summer flora and riverbank wildlife.

Limited shared transport is available at £6 a seat on this walk.  The pick-up point for this bus will be at Wentworth Car Park beside Wentworth Leisure Centre at the start time of 11.30 am.  Booking for this is essential so please book the correct ticket below – with or without transport. NB The walk is linear (it ends at Wark) so please note if you are not using shared transport there is no return transport for walkers joining at Redesmouth village.

Please note that the end time is approximate only, as the walk rate will be that of the slowest walker.  We would envisage returning to Wentworth car park at approximately 5pm.

We can quite often end the walk with a visit to a local cafe or pub (the costs here are your own!) but if the bus is waiting to transport you home you may have to forego this.

To avoid disappointment we recommend you book your tickets in advance online as places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

The booking for the event will close before the event takes place, often on the afternoon of the last working day prior to the event.  There may still be tickets available; unless this event shows either that booking is essential or that tickets are “sold out” you may still be able to attend simply by turning up on the day.  However, do note that places are always allocated on a first come first served basis because of number restrictions.

Please dress for changeable weather, wear walking boots or shoes and bring drinks and snacks/lunch with you (there will be a picnic stop for lunch). Sorry, dogs are not allowed on this walk.  If you have not already booked online, please pay on arrival at the walk start point.

Distance: Approximately 5 miles.

Terrain: Generally, good footpaths with a few muddy sections.  There is some road walking, there are steps at one point and a few stiles.  There are a few steep ascents on good paths or roads.

Meeting place/walk start point: Redesmouth Village. NE48 2EU.   Parking Limited

Postcode: NE48 2EU (general area)

For those wishing to use GPS/Sat-Nav to find walk start points please note that, particularly in open country, postcodes cover a large area, so, whilst the postcode will get you to the right general area, you will still need to follow the detailed directions to locate the actual Walk Start Point.
