Influence on biodiversity
Simonside HillsThe influence on biodiversity is varied and like the landscape linked more to the Quaternary deposits overlying the rocks. A lot of the outcrop of the Ballagan Formation occurs between Rothbury and Netherton on the edge of the National Park and this is typified by small enclosed fields with some arable land.
The biodiversity of the area is more linked to the management of this land and the features associated, such as hedges and field edges than the underlying rocks. Where the soils are derived from the bedrocks there may be some local influence, for example base-loving plants and fine grasses in limestone areas. In areas where there are thick mudstones, drainage is impeded and results in boggy ground dominated with rushes and grasses such as tufted hair grass.
