Case Study: Falstone Tea Rooms
Falstone Tea Room
Amount awarded: £38,000
Northumberland National Park Authority bought a disused building in early 2003 and employed local contractors to carry out the refurbishment work.
The new Tea rooms now have a photovoltaic cells on the roof to convert daylight into electricity, the first of its kind in the National Park; a biomass wood pellet boiler to heat radiators and water, the only publicly viewable domestic boiler of its kind in the North East; and a tank to harness rainwater to use for flushing the toilets, another first for our National Park. There is also a log burning fire similar to the one in Kielder.
The whole restoration project successfully obtained £109,000 from the European Regional Development Fund, £80,000 from Northumberland Strategic Partnership, £8,600 from the Energy Saving Trust and £3,200 from the Clear Skies Initiative. The rest of the match funding was secured from Northumberland National Park Authority.
