The renovation of a farmhouse at High Tipalt from a derelict site into a ‘green’ holiday cottage on an organic holding was a project suitable for support from the Sustainable Development Fund. The contribution that was made only amounted to 8% of the total project costs, therefore it levered in 92% of the match funding from other sources.

The newly refurbished cottage lies in a very unique location on Hadrian’s Wall corridor, and is surrounded by organic farming land. These adjacent crops are used to support local businesses. The house, which has been rebuilt as closely as possible to the original design, has incorporated a new layer of insulation to help conserve the energy that is produced. The energy generated will be mainly produced from a wind turbine and a log burner. Local contractors were employed to undertake the work.

The site is also suitable for educational visits, where people can learn about organic farming and land management in an environmentally manner.
