Additional extras for bird lovers ...
Named as the most tranquil place in England, bird watching is top of the agenda for lots of visitors to this area. Falstone Barns welcomes bird watchers and have recently set up bird boxes, an owl box and are planning to develop a natural pond which guests will be able to access during their stay.
Star attractions to the Kielder area are the raptors. Kestrels can regularly be seen, Sparrowhawks are not uncommon and there is always a chance of seeing Merlins, Peregrines or Goshawks.
Ospreys feature as well as good numbers of wildfowl and gulls throughout the year.
In the main conifer forest nearby, Crossbill is a typical species whilst in the more deciduous, lower areas of the North Tyne Valley Pied Flycatcher and Redstart are common during the breeding season.
