What we do
Developing the visitor experience
Using our in-house team and funding streams such as the Sustainable Development Fund, we can support local communities and businesses in developing new activities and products. Those who have worked with us to develop their business in a way that celebrates, respects or conserves the special qualities of Northumberland National Park are helped with promotion on our website as one of the benefits of working with us.
We work closely with district, county and regional tourism officers to ensure that Northumberland National Park is seen as an important visitor destination within the region.
We provide good information and orientation through our Visitor Centres, local and regional Tourist Information Centres at information points throughout the National Park as well as through this website.
We provide education and interpretation (developed with the local community) in a variety of ways such as on site Information Panels, learning packs designed for schools, displays of traditional skills and news releases to engage with the visitor to enhance their experience.
We give the visitor the opportunity, if desired, to feel they can contribute to the National Park as a landscape and cultural concept through interpretation and concept of visitor payback.
We help support the economic viability of the local community through support for tourism enterprise.
We listen to and work with the local community respecting their quality of life and the positive and negative effects of tourism in the area.
The Green Tourism Business Scheme
Together with partners from the North Pennines and Northumberland Coast Areas Of Outstanding Natural Beauty and ONE NorthEast, we have supported tourism businesses in and around Northumberland National Park to participate in this scheme. By agreeing to the Green Tourism Business Scheme code of conduct and through independent assessment of their activities these businesses have made a commitment towards reducing the impact of their business on the environment.
Your Passport to Northumberland – Coast & Country
Together with Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Northumberland Tourism, we are supporting a training course for front of house tourism professionals, and others involved in delivering services. Initially there will be eight experience-based seminars. The seminars will provide opportunities for participants, to learn about the special qualities, attractions and outdoor recreation opportunities in the two protected landscapes. As ambassadors for the Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty and National Park they will be able to pass this learning on to visitors.
Good Nature Fund
Inspired by what they have experienced in the National Park, many visitors are keen to support ways of caring for it. By contributing to the Good Nature Fund, you can guarantee that your donation will go towards supporting conservation, educational and access projects in the National Park.
