Planning Policy and Guidance
Northumberland National Park Authority is both the strategic and local planning authority for the area. We are therefore responsible for preparing, monitoring and implementing the structure plan and local plans for the area. However as a result of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004, the Structure and Local Plans will be replaced by the Local Development Framework.
In preparing policy for the area we must work to achieve the National Park Purposes and also pursue the aims set down in our Northumberland National Park Management Plan. These requirements mean that planning policy for National Parks is made in circumstances different to that of most planning authorities.
Development Plan
Decisions on planning applications in the National Park are made in accordance with policies within the Development Plan. The Development Plan includes the Local Development Framework
Building Design Guide
The built environment of Northumberland National Park makes a major contribution to the special quality of the area. The Building Design Guide helps ensure that new development reflects this and contributes to the architectural heritage of the area.
Management Plan
Working with the community and partners we aim both to achieve National Park purposes and build a more sustainable economy, one grounded in the special qualities of this National Park, notably the unspoilt natural beauty, tranquillity and cultural inheritance.
