Research and Surveys

Residents Survey

The National Park Authority undertook a survey of all National Park residents in April 2010.  The main purposes of the survey were to obtain views from National Park residents on their level of satisfaction with their local area, on how they feel they can influence decisions within their area, their views on the National Park Authority and to gather profile information such as housing needs information and other baseline information.

We received a 21% response rate to the survey, which is a very good response - particularly considering that the survey extended to 10 pages, with 62 questions.  The results of the survey provide useful information to monitor both the delivery of the Management Plan, particularly in terms of thriving communities, and how well the Authority is progressing towards its aim to become an excellent organisation.

In response to the results of the Residents Survey the National Park Authtority has developed an Action Plan which addresses the issues arising.  The National Park Authority discussed the Action Plan in December 2010, and it was decided to await the completion of the Local Governance Review before finalising the Action Plan.  This is because the review may have impacts upon some of the actions identified within the Action Plan.

Understanding Housing Needs

The National Park Authority undertook a full housing needs survey in 2007; this provided key evidence for the development of planning policies which direct the provision of affordable housing within the National Park.

The residents survey also included questions to establish up to date local housing needs across the National Park which will be used to inform decisions on planning applications for new housing development and monitor the effectiveness of our planning policies set out within the Core Strategy

Business Survey

The Centre for Rural Economy at Newcastle University conducted a Rural Business Survey in 2009 (LINK), from which the National Park Authority have been able to analyse and identify the results for the National Park area and the ‘Action Areas’.  Some of the information is also comparable with the National Park Authority’s 2006 Business Needs Survey, and the 2009 Rural North East Micro Business Survey which was also carried out by the Centre for Rural Economy.
