Equalities Forum
In June 2008 the Authority established an Equalities Forum to help the Authority inform and challenge its work. Forum members are encouraged to consider all equality strands and not just champion specific interests. They act as counsel to the Authority as well as auditor and they monitor the Authority’s progress on improving the delivery of its services to the public.
The Forum meets quarterly. This has included: reviewing equality impact assessments, training, familiarisation with the organisation, and site visits to look at access. The site visits and subsequent discussions have already resulted in improvements to a picnic area, footpaths, handrails and entrances at Ingram and Once Brewed visitor centres and Walltown Quarry.
We have set out some frequently asked quesions below which may help you in deciding if you feel you have the right qualities and experience to sit on the Forum. If you do feel that you do have the appropriate qualities and experience and would like to see services and conditions improve for those who may be affected by inequality, we would welcome your application to join.

Frequently asked questions
What qualifications do I need?
No formal qualifications are required, but some relevant experience in equality matters, personal commitment and enthusiasm would be beneficial. The Authority will ensure that you will receive induction into the workings of the National Park Authority before you attend your first Forum.
Do I get paid?
All non-staff members of the Forum are un-paid volunteers. However, the Authority will cover your travelling expenses and other costs incurred from your attendance. A free lunch is always provided.
Who currently sits on the Forum?
The Forum comprises a number of officers from the Authority, interested members of the public and an elected Member of the Authority. Occasionally those with specialist knowledge/responsibility will attend the meetings to better represent their work area.
How often does the Forum meet?
Currently, the Forum meets twice a year either at Eastburn in Hexham or out in the National Park itself.
Where does the Forum meet?
Most of the meetings take place at the National Park Authority Headquarters at Eastburn, South Park, Hexham, between 11.00 am and 1.00pm (including lunch). Some meetings are held out in the Park, especially when members are reviewing services and provision at our sites and facilities.
Who chairs the Forum?
An officer from the Authority’s Equality Steering Group currently chairs the Forum, but the intention is to make the Forum more autonomous, with volunteers taking more control of proceedings.
Would I be liable for any legal action taken against the Authority?
The role of the Forum is advisory only. The Authority will be accountable for any decisions it subsequently makes.
Do I have to commit to being on the Forum for a minimum amount of time?
No. You are a volunteer and your input is much appreciated. Though we would like to see you get the most from being a member over a longer period – you are free to leave at anytime.
Will it help me get a job?
Not necessarily, but by becoming a member of the Forum, you could benefit in a number of ways:
1) Improve your understanding of equality policy at both national and local level
2) Improve your understanding of the workings of a local authority in meeting its obligations to provide good working conditions for its staff and services to its customers
3) Improve your knowledge and experience of Northumberland National Park as a visitor destination
4) Improve your presentational and debating skills in a conducive and supportive environment
