Oak Tree in the College Valley, Northumberland National Park

Project News

Winter 2007 - Summer 2008

Over the last few months, CCA members have been engaged in a variety of activities. We’ve cleaned out, surveyed and photographed a pillbox to the south of Rothbury by the Scot’s Gap road, and we’re investigating whether or not we can take on a similar project on a pillbox in Rothbury itself.

More recently, a team has been surveying the remains of World War I training trenches on Blaeberry Hill above Rothbury. These are close to the carriageways, and are on the rough heather moorland to the west of the transmission masts. You can see some of them on the web at www.flashearth.com.

During the summer, a team spent a week excavating these trenches. For more details, see Project Excavation 2008.

Secondly, a small team has been engaged in locating and clearing the old boundary stones on Simonside. These mark the boundary between the estates of the Duke of Portland and the Duke of Newcastle - clearing the ground around them means they are less likely to be damaged by machinery or vehicles.

Exhibition

An exhibition of fieldwalking finds will tour the valley this autumn. More details will be posted in our events and activities section when we have an exact schedule. We will also be present at the village shows starting in September.

Fontburn Festival

During the summer, CCA members took part in the Fontburn Festival, celebrating the centenary of the completion of the Fontburn reservoir. They took people on a guided archaeological walk of the area, and their notes on this walk can be downloaded from this website.
