Drovers Project Interpretation : Events

Guided Walks:

Two guided walks were led by the Drovers Project Officers during summer 2004. The first was on Saturday 17th July when we visited the grazing site at Cragend to see the cattle and to learn more about the Drovers Project, cattle droving and conservation grazing. The second guided walk was on Saturday 7th August when we went to the grazing site at Gibshiel. On this walk people were able to see the cattle grazing there and speak to the landowner of the site.

Two further guided walks were completed in 2005. The first of these was on Saturday 7th May 2005 and was a walk in drovers' footsteps; a circular route taking in part of a historic drovers route, Clennell Street. It was led by Drovers Project Officers and National Park Authority archaeologist Dr. Rob Young. Another walk to the Gibshiel grazing site also took place on Saturday 18th June 2005.

Shows:

Drovers Project Officers were present on the National Park stand at the Northumberland County Show on 31st May 2005 and held a beef tasting event at Alwinton Show in October 2005.

Discussion Seminar:

The Drovers Project Officers  hosted a discussion seminar event, entitled The Future Role of Traditional Cattle in Modern Agriculture and Conservation. This event took place on Wednesday 11th May 2005 with the aim of bringing together people from agricultural and conservation viewpoints to discuss the future for traditional breeds such as those targeted by the Drovers Project. This discussion seminar was a good link to the visit by Grazing Animals Project Members  to the Drovers Project on 26th May 2005.

Traditional Music:

The Drovers Project Officers organised a traditional music and arts event at Lanehead Village Hall on Saturday 29th January 2005. The theme for the evening was traditional cattle and droving, and the landscapes of Northumberland National Park. This event encompassed performances by talented singers and musicians along with displays of work by various artists including photographs and paintings. The event was a huge success and tickets were sold out well in advance.
