Cragend : The Cattle

Galloway at CragendGalloway Cow at CragendGalloway Bull at CragendGalloway Bull at CragendThe cattle which grazed Cragend are those belonging to Hotbank farm. Therefore the Drovers Agreement was a two-way contract between Northumberland National Park Authority Drovers Project and the tenant at Hotbank. The cattle were Galloway and Blue Grey, with cows, calves and bulls all used to graze the site.

Grazing to date:

Cragend was grazed for both the 2003 and 2004 seasons with cattle on site for a grazing period between mid June and late August. The grazing period was extended each time due to a lasting abundance of the target species molinia at the end of the initially agreed period.

In 2003, a group of eighteen Galloway and Blue Grey cows with calves at foot, and a bull, grazed the site for a period of eight weeks.

In 2004, a group of twenty four Galloway and Blue Grey cows, with calves at foot, and a Galloway bull, grazed the site between 16th June and the end of August.
