Oak Tree in the College Valley, Northumberland National Park

Redpath : Monitoring and Results

The movement records for Redpath show that the cattle moved throughout the whole site adequately and did not appear to have caused damage to the areas alongside the burns and streams which cross the site.

The vegetation monitoring following the removal of the cattle from the site in mid-November was in the form of walkovers of the site and visual observations of the impact on the vegetation. The cattle do not appear to have had a significant effect upon the rushes although some areas have been grazed. However, the stocking density was lower than anticipated; a higher stocking density would probably show more of an impact, as would introducing the cattle earlier in the grazing season.
