Land Management Projects

Much of Northumberland National Park Authority's work in relation to land management involves using national agri-environment, woodland and forestry grants to deliver National Park purposes. Using in-house expertise it is possible to provide a higher level of advice and support to landowners than is generally available elsewhere.

In addition, over the last ten years or so, the National Park Authority has developed a series of complementary projects, often to test new approaches or resolve particular management issues. These projects have been developed in conjunction with local communities and partner organisations. Volunteers, especially the National Park Voluntary Ranger Service, also carry out a large amount of practical work on the ground. The Authority is additionally now developing a major training and skills project to help reverse the declining number of skilled crafts workers in the area. The National Park and its surroundings are in need of more people to help repair and conserve significant features of the landscape.

Current initiatives cover a wide range of activities and range from vegetation management in and around Iron Age hillforts, reversing the decline of internationally important wetland sites through to developing new approaches to woodland creation and management.
