War Memorials
The Maintenance of War Memorials
Provision of War Memorials ultimately rests with the Home Office although many have in the past been raised through private subscription. Responsibility for the maintenance, repair and protection of individual war memorials lies with the owner, or the body in which ownership is vested. Local Authorities are empowered by Act of Parliament to care for war memorials but are not compelled to do so. More detailed information can be found on the War Memorials Trust Web site.
Inventory of War Memorials
There is an ongoing project to record the whereabouts, form and subject of all war memorials in the United Kingdom. More information can be found on the United Kingdom Inventory of War Memorials web site.
English Heritage
This Government Body maintains an interest in war memorials, particularly free-standing Grade II Listed structures in conservation areas and implemented a scheme in association with Friends of War Memorials to make funds available in the form of grants for the repair and/or maintenance of war memorials in England.
More details on this scheme can be obtained from the English Heritage web site.
