Today's Conservation Work - Mitigating Climate Change
Since 1994, Northumberland National Park Authority has been tackling erosion along the footpaths through the Simonside hills - a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) of international importance.
Thanks to a windfall grant from Northumberland Strategic Partnership and ONE Northeast, we were able to achieve a further phase of this work over winter 2008.
A contribution to costs was been made by Shepherds Walks through the National Park’s Good Nature Fund for local conservation projects.
We have reinforced sections of the ridge path from Lordenshaws over Dove Crag to Old Stell Crag, creating a sandstone path that blends in with the natural geology and is capable of coping with foot traffic in all weathers. 450 tonnes of recycled stone was used to make the path and the heather has now been sown with locally-collected seed.
Residents and visitors will now be able to enjoy a good stretch of path for walks and spectacular views whatever the weather.
