Oak Tree in the College Valley, Northumberland National Park

Merlin

Merlin © Laurie CampbellMerlinThe merlin, our smallest raptor, is at home on the extensive heather moorlands in the spring and summer when it comes to breed.

The merlin requires large territories to raise its young and peculiarly seems to favour tree sites in Northumberland. Merlin numbers seem to be stable or increasing which is encouraging.
