Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team

The Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team is a voluntary organisation. The team carry out search and rescues in remote and urban places throughout the Northumbria Police Force area. Its members share a common interest in providing an important life saving service 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.

The Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team was formed by the voluntary wardens of the National Park in the early 1960s. This was in response to a tragic incident in the Cheviot Hills when two shepherds returning from market died from exposure during a snowstorm. The team consists of around fifty full team members, some of whom are Voluntary National Park Rangers and the team still maintains strong links with the National Park Authority.

  • Affiliated to the Mountain Rescue Council (MRC) of England and Wales
  • Member of the North East Search and Rescue Association (NESRA)
  • Registered charity no. 511313 solely funded by voluntary contributions
  • Operating annually at a cost of £15000
