Northumberland’s autumn light and colour is an inspiration for artists
You don't need to fly to New England for glorious autumn colours. Once again this year, artists and photographers have had their creative juices piqued by the blaze of light and colour which is the Northumberland autumn.

The clear, golden light that the cooler days bring to the north has been a favourite of people with an eye for a breathtaking scene for years as the Lowry Trail at Berwick attests. It warms the native stone and conjures deep, rich hues from the valley trees, moorland bracken and the collage of colour and texture across the wide horizons of the hills.
See the Northumberland autumn for yourself with hundreds of excellent deals in inns, guest houses and campsites across the county. For inspiration, go to www.VisitNorthumberland/autumn.
There are lots of opportunities to get the best from a Northumberland autumn experience: There are guided walks to see the rare red squirrel at Kielder Water and Forest Park, or to watch migrating birds that fly in great skeins across the sunsets of the Cheviot Hills in Northumberland National Park with landscape artist, Peter McEwen of Walk Northumbria, and the wild Northumberland coast with Northern Experience Wildlife Tours. For the children, some of the spookiest fun is to be had across the county at Halloween. Try The Witches Brew at Once Brewed National Park Centre on Hadrian’s Wall, parties at Chillingham Castle, Alnwick Garden, Plessey Woods and Spook Night at the pretty market town of Hexham.
Northumberland’s own artists and photographers provide a taster of the county’s earthly delights through their studios and websites. Mary Ann Rogers, best selling published artist 2009 www.marogers.com says: “Northumberland comes visually to life as the days shorten...Landscape painting is the order of the day. These stunning autumn colours and dramatic light change from day to day and stop me in my tracks. I simply HAVE to try to describe it all the only way I know how.”
Graeme Peacock, one of the North East’s best-known landscape photographers www.graeme-peacock.com agrees: “... the autumn air is colder, denser and clearer and with this change so the sweeping vistas across the Cheviots and over the Till valley are less encumbered and that much more impressive.”
