Getting There

Public Transport: Wooler can be reached by a 50-minute bus journey from Alnwick (service number 473, IDM Travel).

This service runs every two hours.

A town bus service will take you within 400 metres of the common at the edge of Wooler.

The last part of the journey is undertaken on foot along the public road access on to the common.

Car: Follow the A1 to the A697, then travel on that road to The Peth in Wooler to Common Road.

  • Wooler, and the lands surrounding it, endured many raids by marauding Scots between the 14th and 16th century, and later by the border raiders or 'Reivers'. Wooler Common's recent past is less bloodthirsty.
  • Acquired by the Forestry Commission in 1960, the common has a pleasant mix of maturing plantation woodland and open 'common', criss-crossed by a network of public and permissive paths.
