Oak Tree in the College Valley, Northumberland National Park

Responsible Access

Freedom to walk across open access areas comes with responsibilities for users and land managers. Please respect the guidance outlined in the new Countryside Code:

  • Be safe - plan ahead and follow any signs
  • Leave gates and property as you find them
  • Protect plants and animals, and take your litter home
  • Keep dogs under close control
  • Consider other people

Cattle advisory note

Grazing cattle may become protective of calves, especially when dogs are present. If you are approached by cattle, let go of your dog immediately.

For further advice and information visit the National Farmers Union website.

Moorland access

Northumberland is renowned for its wide open moorland, which covers about 70% of the National Park. The Moorland Access Advisory Group has produced The Moorland Visitor’s Code which gives detailed information about how moorland is managed, the fantastic wildlife that is our upland heritage, and how to enjoy it in a responsible way.

In order to make the best of your visit, please call in to one of our National Park Visitor Centres, where you can talk to our informed staff or use the internet access there.
