Oak Tree in the College Valley, Northumberland National Park

The Settlement Boundary

The planting of native trees and hedgerows round the edge of the settlement will help to like the built environment with its wider setting of field and woodland. Where these are existing mature trees or hedges these should be kept and accommodated in any new development. Important trees may be protected by Tree Preservation Orders while similar restrictions apply to trees in Conservation Areas.

Native species which would be appropriate, depending on the ground conditions and space available, would be Ash, Sessile Oak, Birch, Alder, Wild Cherry, Rowan, Holly, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Bird Cherry and Hazel. It is sometimes tempting to use fast growing conifers to achieve screening and shelter in a short space of time; however these normally look out of place in the National Park and should be avoided.
