Street Litter Bins

Northumberland National Park Authority has no responsibility for supplying or sighting street litter bins. Responsibility for supplying street litter bins falls to the District Councils who can be contacted on:

The National Park Authority's policy is to ask people to take litter home and encourage re-cycling whenever possible.

Litter ranges in size from a single sweet wrapper to a bag full of rubbish. The Environmental Protection Act 1990 states that if a person drops, throws, deposits or leaves anything in a public place that causes defacement they are committing a littering offence.  The average fine for littering is around £95, but can be up to £2,500.

Litter in the countryside is unsightly dangerous to animals and can spread disease so follow the Countryside Code and take your litter home.

There are ten litter bins located on seven National Park Authority owned sites where there is deemed to be a greater threat of littering due to refreshment or picnic site provision. These are emptied at least once a week or in some cases daily by the Rangers or the District Council waste management teams. All contents pass through District Council recycling procedures. All litter bins have signs suggesting people take litter home.
