Surveys
From an academic standpoint these have been the most tangible outputs of the project, and from the very beginning Northumberland National Park Authority worked in close partnership with the English Heritage Field Investigation Team, based at York, to complete an ambitious programme of survey work.
In total, some thirteen surveys were undertaken between 1998 and 2004, beginning with the pilot study at Yeavering Bell. These have all adopted a landscape based approach so that much of the area around the hillforts was included thus providing a context for the study of the individual monuments. This has resulted in the recording of many hundreds of other smaller sites, ranging from Bronze Age burial cairns to recent agricultural features. The survey programme represents the most intensive field work initiative ever seen in the Cheviot Hills.
