Byrness Mill
The Elsdon parish registers also refer to a 'Birrines Mill' from 1687 onwards. The limited amount known about this mill has been summarised by Charlton and Day (1982, 166, 168) and by the North East mills Group (see below). It does not figure on either Armstrong's (1769), Fryer's (1820) or Greenwood's (1828) maps of Northumberland.

Site Name : Byrness Mill
- Grid Reference: NU7718 0223
- First recorded 1687
- Last recorded 1841?
The mill is listed in the parish register of 1687 (Charlton & Day 1982, 165 & 168) and apparently there is a mention of the name of a mill at Byrness in the 1841 census, but no miller is listed and no maps appear to show signs of the mill (Waddell 2003, 5-6).
Some foundations including those of a malting kiln are said to remain in the field to the east of the church an immediately south of the café (Charlton & Day 1982, 165 & 168).
