Oak Tree in the College Valley, Northumberland National Park

Hethpool, Northumberland

Hethpool Weir © NNPAHethpool WeirThe village of Hethpool lies in north Northumberland, near the northern limit of the Northumberland National Park. It is situated at the confluence of the College Burn and the Elsdon Burn on the tongue of land bounded by the two streams.

At this point the public road along the valley gives way to a private track which continues up the College Valley following the Burn into the heart of the Cheviot Hills and almost to the watershed on the border with Scotland. To the north the College Burn cuts through the hills to combining with the Bowmont Water between Westnewton and Kirknewton to form the River Glen.

The settlement is overlooked on all sides by the northern extent of the Cheviot Hills, with Newton Tors rising sharply to the southeast of the village. Today Hethpool comprises a small but exceptionally attractive country house, built in the early 20th century in the Arts and Craft style, a farm, and a row of associated cottages to the south, also executed in the Arts and Craft style and considered to be amongst the finest examples of such dwellings to be seen anywhere in Northumberland.
