Wingates: Area of Study

The area of study adopted is represented by the historic township of Wingates.

This was one of the nine townships which made up the ecclesiastical parish of Longhorsley in the 19th century. The 19th-century township contained an area of around 2642 acres (Whellan 1855) on the south side of the vale of the Coquet.

It included the village settlement itself and surrounding farmsteads, namely the Chirm and Wingates Moor to the WNW and SSW, the Wholme (or Wingates Wholme) to the south-east and the farm hamlet of Garrett Lee to the north.

The township’s territory stretched as far north and north west as the Maglin Burn and as far east as the Tod Burn, however the scope of the present study extends beyond these historic boundaries to take in consideration of the township and hamlet of Todburn, including Todburn Moor farm, to the east and Westerheugh farm to the north, since it is apparent that Wingates has had significant administrative and tenurial links with these settlements and communities in the past.
