Thirlwall Castle: Why Conserve It?

In 1999, Northumberland National Park Authority acquired a 99 year lease on Thirlwall Castle and 10 hectares of adjacent woodland.

Thirlwall Castle combines in one site two of Northumberland's most important historical periods - the Roman Occupation and the Border Wars.

Although a ruin, Thirlwall Castle retains several of its orginal features including a dungeon, which illustrates the harsh and dangerous living conditions in this remote and hostile border regions.

Thirlwall Castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade 1 Listed Building and one of only eight in Northumberland National Park.

Thirlwall Castle is located within the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, adjacent to the Tipalt Burn which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Thirwall Castle is located at the junction of the Pennine Way and the Hadrian's Wall National Trial.
