Look out for wintering wildfowl such as whooper swans, mute swans, wigeon, teal, goldeneye and tufted ducks on the loughs and Hadrian's Wall corridor.

Otters and dippers can be seen in rivers and lakes in Northumberland National Park all year round but at this time of year you are likely to see otter footprints in the snow.

January is also when badgers have their young.
