During September, rowans with clusters of red berries can be seen in woodlands all over the National Park but stand out particularly in upland cleughs beside burns. Other plants are fruiting including blackberries in hedgerows and bilberries and cranberries on moorland and bogs.

Heather is still flowering on the moors turning them purple, but will come to an end this month. Blue harebells and yellow tormentil are flowering on grassy hills. Skylarks and meadow pipits are still active on moorland while all the breeding waders have now left for the coast.

Many different types of fungi can be seen in woodlands and on the moorland.
