Oak Tree in the College Valley, Northumberland National Park

Oak

Oak Leaf © NNPAOak LeafOak woodland is regarded as some of the most species rich in Britain. Many species of insect use the oak tree for food and shelter, and birds in return feed on the rich food supply.

The native sessile oak is the most common type within Northumberland National Park's oak woods. These oak woods are now very small and scattered due to the presence of grazing livestock and their use for timber over several millennia.
