Wood Anemone

Wood Anemone © Laurie CampbellWood AnemonesA springtime walk in a dappled wood may well reward you with the sight of the graceful, delicate flowers of the wood anemone. In bright, sunny weather, the white flowers will be wide open, but if it's dull or dark, they'll be closed and drooping.

Wood anemones are indicators that woodland has existed on the site for hundreds of years. Another name for wood anemone is "windflower", as according to the Greek writer Pliny, the flowers will not open until the wind blows.
