Curlews

Britain's largest wading bird, the curlew, is used as the logo for Northumberland National Park. Unfortunately the curlew is now a rarer sight than it was previously. Their return in the spring to the moors to breed fills the skies with sound and gladdens the spirit.

The highest concentrations of curlews are found on the edge of the inbye and moorland. As with other waders, curlews rely on wet areas which are rich in insect food.

Control of predators (for instance crows and foxes) is important to protect their nests which are made on the ground. Be careful where you put your feet too!
