Freshwater Pearl Mussel

This river mollusc is now extremely rare and sadly little understood. The freshwater pearl mussel fortunes probably owe more to the historic demise of the salmon because during part of its larval stage it lives within the fish. The longevity of the freshwater pearl mussel is astounding, with an age of 100 years not being uncommon.
