Oak Tree in the College Valley, Northumberland National Park

Water Crow-foot

Water crow-foot © NNPAWater crow-footWater crow-foot is an aquatic plant that forms large mats with pretty white flowers. Its leaves and stems provide shelter and food for fish and insects.

Water crow-foot needs clean flowing water - pollution or silt can kill it. Most of the plant dies away during the winter, but a root-like food store survives underneath the mud, at the bottom of the water, and forms a new plant in the spring.
