Rothbury

Rothbury © NNPARothburyRothbury Church © NNPARothbury ChurchRothbury, the 'capital of Coquetdale' is a traditional market town, built of the same mellow sandstone as the rolling hills that surround it. It is an ideal centre for gentle walks round about and for exploring the Simonside Hills and Upper Coquetdale. The River Coquet, one of the best fishing rivers in the country, winds its way through the town – still young and full of sparkle from its journey down from the hills.

The town supports a thriving rural community; and as such all services and facilities are here - from an ironmonger to a health club, a vet to the local hostelries. A visit to Rothbury really is a visit to a more traditional way of life - you won't find a chain store anywhere! The town boasts an excellent selection of shops, which makes retail therapy (should you even need it) all the more pleasurable.

In the town centre is the National Park Centre with its inspirational and interactive displays about the surrounding area. It also operates as a networked Tourist Information Centre.

There is plenty of opportunity for leisure activities – Rothbury Golf Glub (9 holes), lies next to the River Coquet with lovely views over the Simonside Hills. Guests are always welcome. There are endless opportunities for walkers and cyclists of all abilities – cycle hire is available in the town. Fishing is also a popular pastime, either at Fontburn Reservoir (6 miles south of the town) or on certain stretches of the River Coquet (permits available).

In mid July the town hosts Rothbury Tradtional Music Festival and dances, a spectacle not to be missed. And all through the year, up and down the valley, are fairs and shows - don't miss Alwinton Border Shepherds show in October, the largest and last show of the season. Cragside House with its popular gardens lies close to the town. The House was once home of famous industrialist William, Lord Armstrong and is now run by the National Trust
