Walking in Rothbury & Coquetdale

Views Down the Coquet Valley © Simon FraserCoquet ValleyThe choice of walking country is varied here, ranging form the high, open, dome-like hills of the Upper Coquet to the pastoral plains and river terraces of the river valley bottom near Rothbury. Isolated farms, and scattered hamlets and villages soften the landscape slightly, but this also a land which for centuries, was bitterly fought over and the signs of this violent period take shape in the defensible dwellings of powerful families and yeomen farmers such as castles and bastles.

Today, traditional skills and pastimes are very prominent; dialect, music and poetry feature strongly in every day life and agriculture shows, folk music festivals and ceilidhs (traditional dances) are colourful events in the local calendar, enjoyed by locals as well as visitors.

An excellent walking guide has been produced jointly by the National Park Authority, the Rothbury and Coquetdale Tourism Association and 'Country Walking' Magazine. These four walking routes can each be downloaded from our free leaflets page. Or you can order the Rothbury and Coquetdale Visitor Guide from our on-line store before your visit so that you can decide what to see and which walks you will enjoy in advance.
