Once Brewed Access Statement

1. Introduction

Our centre is situated in the southern area of Northumberland National Park and also in the centre of a World Heritage Site - on Hadrian's Wall. The area offers superb views and tranquility and is steeped in history. The National Park was designated as such for its spectacular and dramatic expanses of countryside and its wealth of nationally and internationally important wildlife and cultural heritage.

2. Pre-arrival information

The Once Brewed Centre is open daily from the 1st April - 31st October 9.30-17.00 and from November - March weekends only 10.00-15.00.

Arrival by Car
The centre is situated on the B6318 15 miles west of Hexham. A dedicated accessible parking bay is available within 15 metres of the centre entrance.
If travelling from the A1, turn off at Newcastle onto the A69 (Carlisle) and follow brown tourist signs for Hadrian's Wall, this will take approximately 45mins.
From the M6 exit at Junction 44 (travelling south) and Junction 43 (travelling north) and join the A69 and follow brown tourist signs for Hadrian's Wall.

By Air
The nearest airport is Newcastle International Airport. Situated on the A696 north of Newcastle.

By Train
Main line stations are located at Newcastle (east coast line) and Carlisle (west coast). The Tyne Valley Line operates between Newcastle and Carlisle with stops at a number of stations along the line, (Haltwhistle and Bardon Mill being nearest to Once Brewed.) If alighting at Hexham Station from the west the only access from the station is over a bridge therefore those with disabilities may require assistance across the line, please contact National Rail Assistance on 08456 008008 and give 24 hrs notice, the station has personnel on duty during the following hours Mon - Fri 07.15-17.30; Sat 08.15-14.30 and no staff on Sundays.

Hadrian's Wall Bus AD122

You can pick up the bus at either Newcastle or Carlisle or at other rail stations between Hexham and Haltwhistle.

The best visible remains of a Roman cavalry fort in Britain with military bath house and a museum housing the extensive Clayton collection of Roman finds.
Situated a ¼ mile from Chollerford on B6318 and 5 ½ miles from Hexham. AD122 bus service operates April – October and the Tyne Valley service 880/2 stops at Chollerford.
Companion recommended as there are a number of low walls. Disabled toilets are available. Access to remains is via impacted gravel path. Short grass around the fort and the Bath house reached via steep slope and steps. Museum accessed via flagstones and ramps. Parking is 15m from entrance with spaces for disabled drivers, a wide ramp to admission point. For the visual impaired visitor there are sculptures to touch in the museum.
Facilities: cafe (not operated by English Heritage) disabled toilets, parking, museum and shop and education facilities.

The most complete Roman fort in Britain with spectacular views. You can see Granaries, barracks, hospital and ingenious latrines.
Situated on the B6318 the site is 8 miles west of Chollerford, 29 miles east of Carlisle and 4 miles northwest of Bardon Mill. The AD122 runs between Carlisle and Newcastle feeding into the local train stations for operating times please telephone Hadrian’s Wall Information Line 01434 322002 or 01434 344396.
Parking is in the car park next to the National Trust Information Centre, disabled parking bays available. There is a steep climb up to the fort over uneven ground and visitors with disabilities should contact the site before visiting. There are toilets and a small kiosk for snacks next to the car park and a shop within the information centre and there are picnic tables available.

Classic fort and civilian remains plus full scale replicas, there are also ancient writing tablets packed with personal details and you can watch live excavations during the summer. Collections of leathers, textiles, pottery and wooden objects can also be seen. The car park is free to paying visitors and there is a cafe offering light lunches and snacks. The shop offers souvenirs, books and gifts relating to Vindolanda. The site lies 1.5 miles from Bardon Mill, 13 miles from Hexham and 35 miles from Carlisle. The 685/85 bus service stops at Bardon Mill (nearest stop) and connects with the AD122 bus service. If travelling by car from A69 follow signs for Vindolanda and can also be accessed from B6318 also following signs for Vindolanda. Nearest rail station is Bardon Mill and connects with the AD122 bus. Treasures from nearby Vindolanda plus replicas can be seen here and visitors can watch the 'Eagles Eye' film for a reconstructed aerial view of Hadrian's Wall. The site can be accessed from the A69 following signs for Roman Army Museum (nearest village is Greenhead), 3/4 mile from Greenhead, 3 miles from Haltwhistle, 20 miles from Hexham, 42 miles from Newcastle and 28 miles from Carlisle. The nearest rail station is Haltwhistle which connects to the Newcastle - Carlisle. The 685/85 bus service operates between Carlisle and Newcastle and the nearest stop is Greenhead or connect to the AD122 bus at Hexham or Haltwhistle. 3. Booking arrangements

We can book accommodation either in person at the centre.

4. Arrival and car parking

The car park at Once Brewed can accommodate up to approx 60 vehicles plus a dedicated parking for disabled which is about 15 metres from the front entrance. The path leading to the centre is flat and paved.

5. On site

There is car parking for up to about 60 vehicles with designated parking for visitors with mobility issues. The area here is tarmac and marked out while the remainder of the car park is pebbled. The area outside the centre is paved and to the right there is picnic tables including one for wheelchair access with umbrellas to shade from the sun and a sensory garden. The door to the centre opens out over (during the summer it is usually open all the time) and access is level throughout. Once in the centre the reception desk is straight ahead and staff are on hand to assist. There is an induction loop at the desk and visitors with hearing difficulties should turn their hearing aid to the T position. There is also a low level area with wheelchair access. The retail area is small but accessible but should anyone have any difficulties staff are on hand to assist at any time. Seating is available through out the centre and consists of low level couches and more sturdy higher chairs plus tiny stools for tots. The centre is carpeted throughout with supercord which for a wheelchair user is very maneuverable. The toilets are accessed through the centre with the door opening inwards. Once through the accessable toilet is straight ahead which also incorporates a baby changing unit for families. The toilets can be accessed from the courtyard when the centre is closed by a door to the left of the entrance, this door opens outwards. Assistance dogs are welcome in the centre.
There is a car parking charge of £3 per day and is transferable to other National Park car parks (apart from Housesteads) and the money goes to maintenance and upkeep of the National Park. Water bowl for dogs are available next to entrance door.
