Helping us to protect the Park
Protecting the special qualities of Northumberland National Park and enhancing the area, to give visitors greater ways to experience them, is the key function of the authority.
The National Park is a rich historic environment, blessed with Roman ruins, the remains of Iron Age hillforts, bastles to keep out Border Reivers, and the iconic Hadrian’s Wall. Northumberland National Park Authority staff and volunteers work hard to look after these treasures, protecting our heritage for future generations.
We also protect the spectacular landscapes you will see, not only guarding against over-development through planning but advising on everything from overhead power lines to proposals for quarrying and de/forestation.
The authority has a duty to protect the diverse flora and fauna of the park and maintain its biodiversity so that rare species do not die out and can be enjoyed for years to come. To do this, we have to work closely with landowners and farmers, giving them conservation advice and help in looking after these vital landscapes for the future.
